What is Mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that appears in areas of a home that have been exposed to water. In order for mold to develop, it requires a combination of moisture, warmth, and organic matter to feed on. There are over a thousand variations of molds, both toxic and non toxic that can thrive in a home.

Common molds found in the home include:
  • Alternaria
  • Amerospores
  • Ascospores
  • Aspergillus/Penicillium
  • Aurobasidium
  • Chaetomium
  • Cladosporidium
  • Fusarium
  • Memnoniella
  • Pithomyces/Ulocladium
  • Stachybotrys
Where is Mold found?
Mold grows in areas that are exposed to water and thrives on high levels of humidity. The following areas are prone to mold and should be checked professionally for any growths both inside and outside of the walls.
  • Basements
  • Kitchens
  • Closets
  • Bathroom
  • Carpeting
  • Wallpaper

Why is Mold Dangerous?

Millions of microscopic mold spored are easily transported in the air we breathe. This exposure has been medically proven to directly cause serious illness in adults and especially in children. It is estimated that over 30 percent of human are allergic to mold and suffer adverse health effects because of mold. Therefore, the EPA strongly recommends hiring a professional mold specialist to thoroughly and effectively remove toxic mold spores before the problem worsens and becomes a health risk. Mold is identified visually on many surfaces, but what you don't see is the danger thatlurks behind the walls. Aside from the foul odor, exposure to toxic mold spores has been proven by the EPA and CDC to be directly related to many major health concerns such as asthma; headaches; red eyes; respiratory; problems; fatigue'; allergies; hay fever; rashes; psoriasis; lung disease; dizziness; psychological depression; muscular aches; runny nose; wheezing etc.

What are some common mold warning signs?

  • Sewer Backup
  • Basement Flood
  • Foundation Seepage
  • Pipe Leaks
  • Over-flown Tools

What are some common misconceptions about mold?

Myth #1: Mold can be treated simply by repainting the affected area or wiping the surface down with bleach.

Fact: You cannot cover an infection with a Band-Aid. The mold exists behind the walls and will constantly regenerate and re-expose itself.

Myth #2: Mold is not hazardous to your health

Fact: The type and severity of health effects that mold may produce are usually difficult to predict. The risks can vary greatly depending on mold location, amount of mold exposure, and one’s sensitivity to mold effects. The most common health problems caused by indoor mold are skin-related allergic reactions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rashes as well as other mold-related health symptoms including, lung disease, headache, fatigue, dizziness and psychological depression.

Myth #3: If you have mold on the sheetrock walls, the sheetrock must be ripped out

Fact: Mold can be treated using various procedures such as decontamination and fumigation, which eliminates the mold present and stops mold from growing any further. It is unnecessary to rip down walls, and that does not solve the mold problem lurking behind the walls. Replacing the sheetrock without eliminating the mold, will cause the mold to resurface on the sheetrock.

Myth #4: If you don’t see it, it’s not there.

Fact: Mold can be present both in visual and non-visual form. Many times, the mold is present behind the walls and has not yet surfaced. If you have a smell, or have had any water and/or sewer damage in the past, there may be mold present in your house, regardless of its nonappearance.
